Starting a Career in Fashion

I remember being in high school, just about to go to college and wondering what path I was going to follow. I loved fashion and was interested in designing at that point in my life, but ultimately my love for words made me choose to get a Masters in journalism. However, I always have people ask me how to get into the fashion industry since I write about the topic.

When I get asked this question, I always tell them how important it is to get an education in the field of interest. While I didn’t major in fashion (but took classes on fashion writing) I know many people who have gotten fashion degrees and have really helped them forward their career in the industry.

Whether someone is interested in working in the design aspect of fashion -- becoming the next Tory Burch or Valentino -- or if they are more interested in the business side of fashion, getting a degree in whichever outlet that interests them is key.

For all the crafty and creative folks out there, stick with a fashion design degree. Nowadays you don’t necessarily have to go to FIT to get a degree in this, thanks to the lovely internet. Many schools offer online fashion degrees so you can study in between work and at your own speed. Fashion design degree programs will help you learn all about human anatomy, different trends and what the consumer is looking for. Of course you’ll also get to sketch every now and then as well:)

All the students who are interested in studying fashion, but more on the lines of business, then there are a few different options to choose from including fashion merchandising, marketing and management.

These are all great options if someone really wants to work in fashion and wants to learn about the history of it, why it’s in demand, who the consumer is, and how to go about selling and promoting the product.

Fashion is such an exciting field to be a part of because it’s always in demand. Even though the styles change, the demand for fashion won’t. People of all ages, genders, and backgrounds can appreciate fashion. There are plenty of levels too such as couture, designer, and discount depending on what the consumer wants and can afford.

While the industry can be a tough one to get into (and to succeed in), it can be done. Just remember fellow fashionistas out there, it’s always smart to get education in the field to have something to stand out from the rest. If you’re interested in starting a career in fashion, be sure to look into fashion degrees beforehand to get all the needed knowledge in your field to really succeed.

Favorite Summer Brand Right Now: Kate Spade

Every season I find myself checking out designers that I normally don’t tend to sway to and for this summer I am all about Kate Spade. The bright colors, funky patterns and burst of feminine chic that I just can’t stand to stay away from. Here are some of the fun items that Kate Spade has out for summer that I am craving right now.

Mott Street Fisher

I love this handbag because its perfect for work or lunches. It’s proper, punctual and perfectly polished. However, this clean structured bag can come in a punchy tangerine color that really gives it lots of character. I can definitely see myself sporting this Mott Street Fisher, $345 here in Miami paired with a white crochet dress, head scarf and some killer sandals.

Lido

These adorable canvas skimmers are perfect for summer. I love wearing sandals but sometimes I like to change it up and in the summer (especially here in Miami) it can be hard to actually pull off closed toe flats. These Lido’s, $99 are perfect because they are lightweight and comfortable which will allow you to walk around without needing some Dr. Scholl’s inserts. They are also super casual so they look great with a pair of walking shorts and a blouse or tank for daytime wear.

Wish You Were Here Postcard Bangle

Now isn’t this just the best idea ever? The Wish You Were Here Postcard Bangle, $128 has a photo of the beach with the title as the inscription. It’s playful and I can imagine myself wearing it with just about anything. Of course this bangle also makes an incredible gift for someone too! Why send a postcard or a photo of the beach to make your friends wish they were with you? This is so much better!

While I get excited about the Cadbury Creme Eggs like any other during Easter, there are also some other items that have bravely caught my attention. If you know me, taking my attention away from those addictive chocolate covered eggs around this time of year is a very rare thing, but these hot items are definitely something worth sharing (unlike the Cadbury eggs).

Charbonnel et Walker Strawberry Truffles
Just looking at this box of beautiful pink truffles makes me think of Easter, adult style. The Charbonnel et Walker Strawberry Truffles (Saks.com, $28) are so pretty and come in a bold pink box that reeks of femininity. I don’t know about you, but I’d take a box of these babies any day of the week, especially in replacement of those wicker Easter baskets filled with plastic grass.

Kate Spade New York Floral Stud Earrings
I’ve always had a love for flower studs because they give off such a simple elegance but can still be worn with a pair of jeans. The Kate Spade New York Floral Stud Earrings (Saks.com, $45) are my cup of tea. They are from the Down to the Wire Collection and are perfectly crafted with 12k gold plated to give you just enough sparkle. I can picture wearing them for a meeting with my hair pulled back and a pencil skirt, but I also see myself sporting them with a pair of shorts and a billowy blouse. The perfect staple earrings.

Rebecca Minkoff Colorblock Clutch
When I saw this clutch, I knew I had to have it. The Rebecca Minkoff Colorblock Clutch(ShopBop.com, $330) is the perfect handbag to have for the spring and summer season. It is an effortless beauty made with the perfect shade of tan leather accented with navy patent leather trim, which I think gives a nice nautical feel to it. The fact that this little bag has a strap to wear for the day makes me love it even more! A handbag that has multiple purposes and looks that good needs to be in every girls wardrobe.

Lose Yourself Blush/Bronzing Powder Duo & Lip Gloss Set
I am obsessed with all Nars products and am so excited to see this brand new set which I believe is the must have of the season. The Nars Lose Yourself Blush and Bronzing Powder Duo & Lip Gloss Set (Sephora, $49) is beautiful with colors that look amazing for right now. That shimmery bronzer will definitely be used in my beauty bag and that lip gloss is so lush, I’m not sure how I ever lived without it before!

Chloé For the Spring

There is just something about the clothes from Chloé that always seem to catch my eye. Each silhouette is so feminine and flirty, without trying too hard. Pure effortless beauty. I think women love this designer so much because the label has classic styles that always make a woman feel confident and beautiful.

I am excited to wear some Chloé for spring because the styles are perfect for this time of season. I love the simpleness of the Cotton Cap Sleeve Wrap Dress with a tie waist because it can be worn on so many occasions. Whether you prefer to picnic in the park or head out for dinner by the beach, this dress can really do it all. Pair it with neutral heels or simple ballet flats and a cardigan for different effects. It’s such a basic staple piece in the wardrobe that will be sure to take any girl anywhere for years to come.

While I love the simple wrap dress, I am really drawn to the Mouseline Pleated Skirt. I love how it has so much movement and definitely catches the eye with each step. Pair this very full skirt with a form fitted top or blouse for the ideal contrast. The overall look is so romantic and feminine, like something you might see in a classic movie, when a lady really did dress like a lady.

How can a woman not like what Chloé has to offer? Everything from the structured jackets, to the sheer ruffled blouses and silk A-Line skirts, make up one gorgeous collection that will make any woman feel her best. For spring, there is no other collection I am looking more forward to wearing than the very feminine, very pretty Chloé.

White is the Color of Snow....

But it’s also the color for spring! There is just something so ideal when it comes to mixing spring time weather with all over white attire. I love wearing white because it just feels so effortless but still allows you to really stand out. While black is timeless and sophisticated, white is breezy and pure, polar opposites but two amazing looks.

This spring we are seeing all the big names take on this craze for white like Philip Lim’s latest resort collection, but I have to admit I am loving what VIKTOR & ROLF has to offer. The pieces for this season are simple and sexy, which is easy for all of us girls to wear anytime, anyplace. One of my favorite pieces is the VICTOR & ROLF Off White Dress, $845. This dress is so simple it’s silly, but the overall style is just so perfect. Everything from the cowl-neck to the seam accentuating the waist makes this dress feminine and flattering.

I think pairing this dress with a pair of dramatic black heels with a bold clutch is the perfect evening look. Keep the hair tousled with beach waves and some bold pink lips, perfect for spring. However since this dress is so simplistic it also makes it versatile so I would also love pairing some flat sandals with a straw tote, hair up in a loose pony tail and big sunglasses which is a great daytime look.

We also say models saunter down the runway in the amazing VIKTOR & ROLF Off Shoulder Shirtdress, $1,125 which puts an edgy spin on such a classic style. Sure, we all love the shirtdress, I know I am obsessed but this dress is like no other. It’s rough and bold and I am just loving it. The fun style has a wide neckline making one side off the shoulder and an asymmetrical hemline that is so unique its alluring. On the runway this dress was paired with white peep toe moon shoe-inspired booties but I think that it would look the best with a real edgy shoe to give it a huge contrast. Any shoe with studs is my first choice because they are just as tough as the dress itself.

The moral of the story today kiddies? Get your white on, and I don’t mean anything that has to deal with snow.

Well, thanks to the wonderful people at Who What Wear, I was confronted with a new item that I feel I just have to have! This morning when I looked in my email to find the styling tips newsletter, I saw the Alexander Wang Amber Spiral Notebook Clutch, and I just fell in love. This clutch is so cute and perfect for a fashion writer, so I am thinking perhaps I should invest in this gorgeous little gem even if it is a whopping $625...err $436.99 now on sale. Is it meant to be?

The Latest Obsession from ShopBop

My Love for Boots!

What girl doesn't like a fabulous pair of women's boots? I know I do! Now that Miami has been seeing some super chilly days everyone has been busting out the boots. From short little ankle boots to super thigh high ones, it seems like the ladies here in Miami are sporting just about every type.

Personally my favorite boots right now are anything from La Canadienne. I'm loving the Tami Over the Knee made with soft suede and a sexy cuff that makes these boots perfect for anytime of the day. Since they are flat, you can wear them all day long walking around shopping without your feet killing you, which I totally love!

The Galaxy boots are also ideal for walking around but they have a wedge heel which gives us short girls some added height. I think that these boots would look fabulous with a comfy sweater dress with patterned tights. Nothing says winter fashion quite like a fabulous pair of boots and a chunky sweater.

I'm thinking it is time for me to grab myself a pair of some hot new boots for when the Miami temperature decides to take a dip again, and any boots from La Canadienne will surely do the trick since they are waterproof-perfect for the notorious tropical rain showers we get here!

Tonight I will be attending the Go Red For Women Miami Red Dress Fashion Show at the Bass Museum on Miami Beach. The event will bring fashion and awareness together--helping us understand heart disease, the number 1 killer of women.

I am a big supporter of the cause since my mom has heart disease so I am thrilled to take part in this. Of course I am just as happy to check out the fashion show at 8:30pm and sport some red for the show:)

A Fabulous Event

Last Friday, Oct. 15th I was invited to TAudrey's event at Cafeina Lounge and it was fantastic! The drinks were flowing, and Tiffany Ortiz's (below) TAudrey line seemed to really make a fabulous impact on everyone around. The setting was romantic and chic with the candles lit and the TAudrey's famous photos along the wall. All in all it was so much fun and I officially have like five new things I want from the fall line!

Ah, these booties have been around for a few years now (really old pic!). I remember finding them hidden on the sale rack at Marshall's for...wait for it...$10! I know, exciting right? Okay so while most of you are scouting around looking for the hottest new pair of boots, here in Miami I am looking for a hot pair of nude flats. While it is still hot enough to be wearing sandals, I just can't seem to stomach it anymore! I need a little bit if fall fashion here, so while I may not be wearing thigh high boots (tear!) I will be wearing some closed toe flats.

My new TAudrey Bracelet!

Well, last night's Shop for the Liga event at the Elk's Lodge seemed to be quite a success. Women of all ages were enjoying the food, drinks and of course the shopping from various local vendors that included anything from candles, jewelry and beauty products.

I for instance, fell in love with yet another item from TAudrey's collection, this lovely bracelet for my bad girl side.

I am really excited to attend the Shop for the Liga fundraiser for the League Against Cancer tonight at the Elk's Lodge in Coral Gables. Not only is it for a great cause, but one of my favorite Miami jewelry designers will be there displaying her amazing stuff!

My Fabulous Faux Fur Vest

It seems like faux fur is everywhere this season. There is something super chic and trendy about this lush style, even if it is fake! I fell in love with it the moment I saw Rachel Zoe wearing it on her hit show, The Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo this season. Of course she is always so chic with everything she wears, hopefully I can try to pull my Forever 21 vest off almost as good as her!

Living in Miami may cause an issue, since the fall here is anything but chilly, but I think I am going to give it a shot anyway. I am going to keep the blouse underneath, short sleeves or sleeveless like I have in the photos, just so I am not too hot.

Wow, I have to say Rachel Bilson looks mighty fine in this delicious leopard print dress with just the perfect pop of color of the red clutch. I really like her hair pulled back in a messy pony, it just compliments the richness of the outfit perfectly.

Wishing I Could Wear This....

Well, now that it is officially fall, I am obsessed with all the season-based styles; however, Miami doesn't necessarily bring that slight nip in the air so I can wear my leather jacket and boots. Yeah I know, poor me right? I live on the beach, what am I complaining about? Well, I have to say I miss wearing fall styles more than ever and never really appreciated it when I lived in Connecticut.

Oh how I wish I could walk around with a pair of thigh high leather boots over skinny jeans, with a long tee hidden under a leather jacket. I crave these looks but right now am only able to embrace them through various fashion publications.

Once Christmas comes around, I can bring out the leather for when I head back to Connecticut for the holidays. haha! But until then...

Things I'm Loving Right Now....

Okay now that fall is here there are some items I am crushing over. While I am insanely obsessed with the fur vests and the leather shorts, I am just as hungry for the beauty products out there.

I'm loving the Nars Lip Gloss Strawberry Fields. Now, I am normally a Champagne color gloss girl, I have tried out this darker shade and have fallen in love.

OPI nail polish never seems to disappoint, and this season I have fallen hard for "I'm Suzie and I'm a Chocoholic." This brownish red polish is perfect for fall and will work perfectly for the winter too.

After living in Miami for almost a year, with all the flash and vibrant colors, I am craving everything with a darker hue, and these two items seem to fill my void rather nicely.

Yay! I am so excited that my book review for Amy Sohn's Run Catch Kiss novel is up and running over at the Chick Lit Club. I read this book a few years back and remember being so taken by how graphic and scandalous it was. Nowadays, I think we are almost used to reading or watching something that talks so opening about sex, no matter how raunchy, but this novel still tantalizes the senses that's for sure! Amy has definitely been one of my favorite author's and I am so glad I was finally able to write a review on a book that has changed my way of writing and being comfortable with really saying what I want to say, without worrying about who's going to think what!

Bikini Goers at All Ages

So after chatting with some females, I can usually get the feeling that us twenty somethings out there feel that women in their forties should not be wearing bikinis, no matter how good their bodies are. As I watched the Real Housewives of NY, I see Romana strutting around in an itsy bitsy bikini and think, "Damn she looks good...probably better than I would in that thing!" However, reading some tweets and blogs about it, I see that other females do not feel the same and are kind of disgusted that a mother would be romping around in something that hardly cover her nipples.

I find it interesting how people think it is not OK for a mother who has a decent shape to wear a bikini, but when a younger woman has one on with cellulite, stretch marks or a belly bulge that is considered to be the norm. Let's take Jennifer Aniston here for a second. In this pic, she has on a tiny bikini and looks fab! I mean, seriously there is nothing negative you can say about it, but yet people still judge since she is 41-years old. So, do you think that a woman over the age of 40 should not wear a bikini, even if she looks like Jen? Weigh in and let me know your thoughts!

Pardon my language, but what is going on with this god awful skirt? A girlfriend of mine brought this skirt to my attention today, and I was beside myself at how horrible it is! Can you guess where this is from? Forever 21, you may ask? Oh no, it is from Express of all places. Are they going back to their teenie bopper early 90's look or what? I think what we have here is a bad case of someone trying to stick all the latest looks (studs, denim, and prints) together and wound up getting a big ol' mess! Ride em' sister!

Last Friday, I had the pleasure to enjoy Candace Bushnell at the Biltmore Hotel in Coal Gables. As always she entertained with her strong and energetic personality that livened up the whole room. She really is a fascinating person, with an audience who truly adores her, complimenting her writing style, the characters that she uses and just simply stating they were "huge fans."

An incredible night with a extraordinary woman who really took chick lit to its defining moment! Next, is SATC 2 for me on May 27th! Woohooo!

A Fashionable Event

Last night at the mansion of Norma A. Quintero, at Villa Vecchia there were cocktails pouring, food given out buffet style and of course the very talented designer, Zuhair Murad was there showcasing his extraordinary dress collection. The event was amazing! Miami socialites were all over the place as Zuhair Murad's dresses cascaded down the runway.

For any of you interested in seeing his collection and are in the Miami area today, he will be at Neiman Marcus in the Bal Harbour Shops! Check out all of his lovelies. They sparkle, they shimmer and some of them even have a city print displayed along their fluffy, flowing shirts! Truly delightful!

I was so excited to see on the Trashionista site that they posted these adorable new charms and bracelets for writers, authors and chick lit lovers alike. These darling little trinkets are from a shop on Etsy.com called, A Likely Story and I urge you all to check it out if you are in the writing business, love books or at least know someone who does. I love writer themed jewelry but I can never find any that aren't totally dorky, but thanks to Trashionista, I finally did!

A Rainy Day

The rain is coming down here and the waves are thrusting in anger. What a nasty day. Do you find when it is raining outside that it completely effects the way that you dress? Most women find that when the weather is gloomy, so is their wardrobe. It's funny when the sky is grey I always pick out the neutral colors in my closet to put on, especially black. How about you?

Well, its a beautiful day here in Miami Beach, but I can only enjoy it from my window since I have lots of work to do. The end of the month is always the most grueling. Oh well! As I am sitting here, naturally my attention has brought me to something else rather than actual work, and that is Candace Bushnell's new book, The Carrie Diaries, which is to be released on April 27th. I am absolutely ecstatic to start reading this book. I get the pleasure to meet my favorite author once again here at Books and Books on April 30th. So very excited. It is an 80's themed party, so it should be a good time. Perhaps I should go as Carrie with her huge fro, pink leggings and sweatbands? Or maybe not:)

Look I'm Feeling Now....

So the look I am really obsessed with these days is shorts with a blazer. I find it extremely chic with a modern twist. I have seen a few different styles I like, for instance a pair of cream colored tailored shorts with a black blazer and a long lightweight button down blouse underneath. I am also a fab of the tan blazer with white shorts and a cream colored top.

I think tonight for Happy Hour I will be sporting my new beige shorts with tie belt and a black blazer with a pair of some hot heels!

Dior Addict Lip Glow

Sephora sent me an email explaining how and why I need to try the new Dior Addict Lip Glow Lip Treatment, and I have to say I am anxiously ready to do so! Not only is this delicious looking lip gloss in a rosy shade of pink supposed to give you a pretty glow, but it also is jammed pack with sunscreen and lots of moisture, so lips can stay protected, soft and beautiful. And since it is from Dior, one of my favorite brands, I feel as though there really is no saying no to this magical lip butter.

Have any of you tried this lip treatment? If so, write in and let me know what your thoughts are! So far, I have only heard good things about it:)

In Need for a New Purse...

So as spring rears its delightful little head, I am on the verge of finding a new purse. Now, I am not looking for simply any purse here... I need one that is not only classy, with timeless style, but it needs to also be able to haul all of the junk I need to bring with me when I am attending seminars, conferences and meetings. I am considering buying a Prada tote since I think it is a classy piece that will be able to take me from season to season. However, I am always opened for suggestions. Can you help me find the perfect tote?

Miami International Fashion Week

So last year, I was at Fashion Week in NY, for the first time and had the most amazing experience. This year, I was lucky enough to be asked by a Miami based magazine to attend the Miami International Fashion Week. Naturally this show was completely different than the one I attended at the Waldorf.

Sure, there was glamor, glitz and lots and lots of sparkle, seeing as it is Miami after all, but there was defiantly a different vibe from the people there, especially my fellow press members. After being yelled, practically kicked and glared at, (from the press mind you) I was bout ready to head for the hills (or maybe just back to the city?) It's funny I was never treated quite like this even in New York. I actually made connections with other press members, but here they want nothing to do with you. Just stay out of their way and you may make it out alive:)

Anyways, I swallowed my pride and attended three out of the four shows. The first show I was completely overdressed for. In a city like Miami, I figured that I need to really vamp it up a bit, but apparently no other member of the press had the same intuition and therefore stuck with jeans and a t-shirt.

The fashion was pleasurable and insanely perfect for this "magic" city. The swimsuits glistened and were exceptionally tiny--I'm not even talking about the women's line either. The gowns were long, and flowing with bursts of color and delicate textiles. Everything you would want to see on a Miami runway.

I met a fantastic new designer (which naturally was from New York), whose name was Fantasia and instantly befriended her. She was like my soul sister, except blessed with creating fashion, as opposed to writing about it. We went to the after party at Klutch nightclub together, danced to Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake and had a glass of champagne to celebrate.

Overall, Miami International Fashion Week was quite an experience. Would I do it all again? For sure!

Candace Bushnell Event

Last night I was lucky enough to be a part of The Second Century Fund of the Welles-Turner Memorial Library at the Glastonbury Hills Country Club. "A Stylish Sunday" was a cocktail event with author (and one of my idols), Candace Bushnell. After a couple hours of mingling, Candace graced us all with her charismatic personality as she spoke about growing up in Glastonbury, her books and of course Sex & the City.

It was a fun night of good food, Cosmos and great conversation. The event was for an incredible cause to help the library and it was great to have Candace share her memories of the Welles-Turner Memorial Library. As a child she was always reading in the library and said she was happy to be apart of this event.

So as I watched the news broadcasts today and read the paper, I noticed how everyone was making such a huge fuss over this day since it is 09-09-09. It's funny to me since today is my birthday and as my mom said I have a pretty "neat date."

Seemed just like any other day to me...how bout you? Anything happen that was incredibly significant to all of you? So many people were getting married today in hopes of granting their marriage luck throughout the years. I think all of this is silly to be honest. I mean, can a day really be that lucky? Sure it's cool, but can it really grant us the luck that we are so hoping for? Probably not. But oh well. Let's let the other people have their fun, shall we?

As for my birthday, I think after you hit 21, 22 you are finished with celebrating getting older. I sure as hell am. All I wish for is a better year than last year...perhaps this "magical" day will be able to grant me that. Ahhh wishful thinking.

Internet Sensations?

OK I know that everybody tends to want a piece of stardom, but come on. Seriously, some of these Internet sensations that have been coming about over the last couple years have been a load of crap. I find it so interesting how even the stupidest and worthless thing imaginable can be considered something special when it is posted on YouTube.

Take this kid that I watched on the Early show Friday morning. He lip sang to a black eyed peas song in the Mac store with sunglasses on and now all of a sudden people are paying attention to him because he was "creative enough" to move around a bit, videotape himself and post it on the Internet. Seriously what has out world of entertainment come to these days? And why was he on the Early show with such a pathetic routine? Do people really believe that this is seriously a sensation?

What killed me is that the kid actually told one of the reporters that he is now considered famous. Famous of what? Dancing (hardly) and lip singing (does that really take talent?) in a store? So this kid is famous for what most of us do in our everyday lives except we normally don't tape and post it.

I just don't understand. Whatever happened to really entertainment? Like shows, movies and concerts? Now all we have is YouTube to look forward to? That doesn't seem that sensational to me.

Rainy Days

Although today is a beautiful sunny summer day, I waned to write about what New England is used to seeing this summer: rainy days. Working from home can sometimes feel like I work 10 hours at an office, because normally I have so much to do I am constantly going the minute I wake up at 6am. But I have one indulgence that I personally love and give to myself every so often.

When the weeks comes near an end and I hear rain falling outside, I reach over to my alarm and turn it off. I then turn the coffee on in the kitchen and go back to bed. I don't normally fall asleep again, but I do get a chance to stay cozy in bed as I listen to the rain hit my window and I smell the coffee brewing in the other room. It is a little luxury that I like to give myself every now and then.

Sure, this may not sound like much, but it is when you normally are rushing to get up, get ready and start your day. It is nice to have at least one day to just leisurely get out of bed and relax for a little longer, even if it is for just 10 minutes longer than what you normally do.

Work at Home Distractions...

As a writer, I do have the luxury of working from home and for the most part I really enjoy it. Many people ask me how I am able to stay home and actually get work done, and I tell them I just do it. I don't think about it, I just get up like I would as if I were going into an office, have my coffee and start typing. When people tell me that they would be too distracted to work from home, but I never feel the same way, at least I never use to.

I can get up early and start typing even when it is a rainy, dreary day and all I want to do is sleep in. I can also get up early and start work even when I just simply don't feel like it, but trying to work when you have construction going on right outside of your apartment, is a whole other thing.

Ever since I got back from California, I have had construction going on at my complex and it has seriously distracted me to no end. I find myself constantly losing my train of thought mid sentence and getting frustrated. I have never really felt this type of distraction before, but now I seem to have an even better understanding of being what people mean about being too distracted to work.

Now, I know there really is no room to complain, and an outsider may look at my situation and want to spit in it with disgust, but I am sure that my other writers can vouch for me when having loud, banging noises coming from outside your office starting at 8am until 4:30pm, it quite upsetting. But I guess we can't all just have our ways and work on a steady and productive scale all the time. I guess that is just life.

Fall? Not Yet!

I am always the person who gets excited for fall. I enjoy the leaves changing, the crisp air and most of all: the fashion. However, this year everytime I see a "back to school" commercial or a pair of boots in a magazine, instead of getting anxious about the change of seasons, I am dreading it. This summer has been the rainest and most depressing one yet, and I don't think I am the only one feeling this (unless you live in an area where it is always sunny--curse those Californianians! haha).

So instead of getting myself physched up about the autumn I am staying where it feels comfortable: in denial. I am living this month of August without the thoughts of fall (well except for when it comes to fashion, since I am a fashion writer I will have to be in tuned with the fall fashion). I want to think that there are many more nights of warmth and humidity as well as frozen alcholoic drinks. I want to keep the brightly colored clothes in my closet and keep a warm bronzing tan on my skin. Ahh summer, how I love thee. Why can't we just get more of you?

So to all of you that are excited about fall, that's great. I am glad that you can handle it, because this girl is having some serious issues with coming to terms with the fact that seasons change too quick to handle.

Unpaid Writing Gigs

In this economy, it really baffles me that I find so many writing jobs out in the world that offer no pay what-so-ever. Sure, we have all done the internship thing where we get the required experience for school and something to put on our resume, but these types of non-paying jobs are something else. These jobs are NOT internships, they are just simply jobs without pay, and in many of the descriptions, they ask a lot more of you then they would if you were only an intern.

As I scroll through different gigs and potential writing careers, I am amazed at how many ask for so much but are willing to give so little. Is the economy so bad that companies cannot pay for writers to work for them? And is the economy so bad that writers are actually subjecting themselves to working for jobs without pay? How is this possible? Is this what we have become?

Dilema's with Writing Personal Stories

As I was interviewing author, Cathy Alter, Up for Renewal: What Magazines Taught me about Love, Sex and Starting Over, I started thinking about the challenges of writers, especially when writing a memoir. Writing a true story about your life is hard because you need to describe the people and relationships around you specifically, in order to be completely truthful, and if you didn't want to be completely truthful, you would be writing fiction. So how are you able to write what you want and need to write without worrying about how others around you will react?

Cathy told me that a few people were upset and hurt after reading her book because they thought that she offered up too much information on her personal life. But here is the thing: as a reader, what do you look for in the book? You want the juicy, personal details and not just the sugar coated version. Who wants to read a book that doesn't offer any mystery, any excitement and any anguish? I know I sure don't.

So here is the dilemma. As a professional writer and aspiring author, I am having the issue of who and what I want to put in my book and how much information I should put. It is difficult because I feel that in order for the reader to really get a good mental picture of who I am, she needs to know who my friends really are and what makes my family tick. A reader needs to know the goods and the bads when it comes to the people and the issues in my life in order to really feel moved in my story. So how can I do this without ruining my relationships?

I find this is a struggle that many writers deal with and I find that most of the successful writers ended up putting everything out there for the world to see, whether it hurt others or not. I guess this is a situation I will have to ponder with.

You Better Recognize...

To my amazement I am actually getting known in the writing world. A author friend of mine, Cathy Alter told me that her PR person had me on a list of contacts to speak with about writing an article on Cathy and her book, "Up for Renewal." She and I were both completely taken away!

First of all this makes it pretty easy seeing as we already know each other, and I already love her book. So writing an article on her will be a snap and completely enjoyable!

Second of all, I am so pleased that I was on her PR's contact list. It is really exciting for a writer to have that type of recognition. Every writer wants to be well known and wants to be contacted for work. This was and is a very exciting moment for me.

Back Home

Well I am back home from my trip from California and I still cannot get over how much stuff happened while I was away...so many celebrity deaths, Palin retires her title (big surprise there), and I noticed a lot of changes within myself. I think California really allowed me to come alive once again.

After my father passed away it was difficult to determine really why life was worth living since in the end... we all just die. However, something happened to me while I was away. I felt good, I felt relaxed and most of all I felt alive. I have been over going quite a transformation--cutting my hair, considering getting a tattoo in my father's honor and most importantly... moving! Yes I think it is time for me to make that change and move to a different place--perhaps a place that is warmer and sunnier all year round:)

Jumping to a different topic...my article in Redbook is finally out! It is on page 81 in July's issue, so please take a peak! It regards a health issue on eggs, however I will not give anything else away!

Few Rants and Raves

So as a nerdy book reader, I am disgusted with Kindle. I'm not sure if any other readers feel this way, but seriously why is technology trying to take just about everything away from us? It's bad enough that the newspapers are slipping away and people like to look online for fashion tips rather than in the glossy pages of a fashion magazine, but now people want to look on a little screen to read a book? Doesn't anyone want to get away from the computer screen these days?

Yes, I write for online content. However, I am a huge fan of print and would really like to do more work with it. I personally like to be able to hold and touch my news or my books. With Kindle, you can hold something but you mine as well be holding your laptop. I already keep my eyes glued all day on a digital screen for work, so when I like to read I want to do it for enjoyment. I want to relax my eyes and take them away from technology, if only for an hour!

So as you can probably tell...I will not be buying my books on Kindle. No, I will continue to buy my paperbacks and hard covers through the bookstores I cherish, thank you very much.

Friendships...fading in the dust.

It's funny, the old saying really is true: you understand who your real friends are when tragedy strikes. Its an unfortunate thing, but many people apparently get afraid to talk about death, and when a friend of theirs is grieving they tend to shun them away. People really do not understand how to act and behave when a friend is sad and lonely after a death in her family. I think it is appalling how friends can behave--ignore you, change the subject when you are sad, ditch you and my favorite, focus only on their own lives and forget about the friend who is hurting.

Sure, people don't understand how to help someone grieve, but why not even ask? Why just pretend like nothing happened? Why tell someone you will be there for them, when clearly you are not and have no intention on being? Is it so hard to take some time out of your busy schedule to ask your friend how she is coping? Or if she needs anything, and actually be sincere?

What most people do not understand is that normally the person who is grieving only wants a person to listen. Rarely do they want their friends to spend money on them or do charitable events for them; all they want is a friend who is willing to give them a little of their time. And it shouldn't be that hard of a task! Just because your friend is sad, doesn't mean you cannot take an hour out of your day to sit and talk with her. Is she really that much of an inconvenience to you? Is she really dragging your life down that much?

It's interesting...people do not know how to act until the same thing happens to them. Unfortunately that really works with grief. People will never be able to just "be there" for someone apparently until they experience the pain their friend has been going through. But what gets me is, when it comes time for the other person to deal with something sad and depressing, she will expect the friend who she completely ditched, to be there for her. Weird how things work like that.

I am going to California for 2 weeks, and will most likely be taking that time off and away from my computer, (and re-"kindle" my old love for books!) however I will write when I come back. I am very excited for this trip, because I think it is time to get away. I think it will be great for the soul...:)

Book Signing

Tomorrow night I will be attending a book signing for a remarkable woman and author. Penny Pearlman, author of Pretty Smart: Lessons from our Miss Americas will be at the New Canaan Library tomorrow night talking about her book.

I met Penny back in April when I went to a writer's conference for the IWWG, and was moved by her professional and personal story. She is a professional speaker and cancer activist and has been cancer free for many years herself. I think I really took to her because I was drawn to the fact she had stage IV cancer and survived. I always use to use these positive stories to help me stay strong for my father and my family while he was going through his cancer treatments, but now, it's different. When she told me her story and I told her mine, I felt connected to her and yet still so inspired by a cancer survivor--something that I have not felt in a while.

I normally feel anger and sadness when I hear someone "beating" cancer because my father was not able to. But it was different with Penny. She truly is a remarkable woman and I couldn't be happier for her achievements.

Change of Scenery

So as I was sitting outside on my deck this morning, sipping my coffee and typing away on my laptop, and I realized how strangely my life has been taking a turn. To my utmost surprise, things have been going actually pretty well. I think I am almost ashamed of even writing that because of my father not being here with me, but for whatever reason I have some positive things happening in my life these days.

First of all I made a painting for my living room that I am exceptionally proud of, and want to continue painting because of the way it made me feel. I was so relaxed and comforted while I was painting each stroke on the canvas. It was so strange but so freeing. I think I really need to start working on painting more and really painting from a place deep inside of me instead of always just doing things that represent the fashion realm. I am thinking I need to look into hanging my paintings up somewhere...in a gallery of some sorts...

I also got a book deal; not on the book I have been trying to write, but another one about getting your book published, so I think it will be both beneficial and educational. I am very excited and have been working on it already. I also made an appointment with an photographer that I use to work with to do my head shot for the author's bio on the book!

I am now a member of three different memberships including, International Women's Writing Guild, International Federation of Business and Professional Women and Friends of West Hartford Public Library--and before you make fun of me for joining something in the library, let me just tell you there are so many benefits to being part of this group, such as writer's workshops, book clubs, free passes to museums and so on. I am very excited to be a part of all these exciting opportunities.

Yes, things are going pretty well right now. I just wish my father could be here for me to tell him the things that are happening. I know how proud he would have been. I can only hope he is somewhere now where he can see all of my accomplishments.

Memorial Day Weekend

There really is something to say about not having a father. For the lucky individuals that have not faced this harsh element yet, you're beyond lucky. After losing your father, certain things will really affect you differently. Take this weekend, for example. It was Memorial day, but for me it didn't feel like it.

Normally, I would put on a sundress and put a dessert together to bring over to my parents for their bbq. We would all sit around on the porch and chat about when my dad wanted to open up the pool. This year, there was no talk of that. This year, there was no bbq at my parents. I couldn't even stomach the thought of even going to a bbq this year. The smell of hot dogs on the grill actually made me feel nauseous.

It's weird. My father passed away in March and the last two holidays--Mother's Day & Memorial Day--have been extremely difficult. I can't even imagine how Father's Day will be. I already had a hard time seeing the Father's Day cards while I was looking for a wedding card for my sister. After I picked out one for her, I turned around and there they were. It was like a slap across my face. I stood still, in the middle of the isle with tears welling up in my eyes. Can you believe I was actually looking at ones that I wish I could have given my dad? Some may say I was torturing myself, but I just couldn't seem to be able to back away.

Grieving is incredibly tough. The moment you think you are doing OK, it just hits you. Grieving really is a bitch. And it's not fair the emotions that we have to feel day in and day out. How do you grieve?

Little Black Dress Networking Event

Last night I went to a fun event hosted by Wanda Mann from The Little Black Dress Traveler. The event was called, Little Black Dress Networking Event. It was held at the Williams Club between Park and Madison, and had makeup, jewelery, appetizers, wine and of course networking.

It really was a fantastic event to be a part of. I met so many wonderful women there that had such awesome careers, such as tango dancers, networking consultants and shoe buyers (right up my alley!). It was a wonderful time and I am so appreciative to the women who took the time to speak with me about my own career and helping me achieve more.

PDA on the MTA

So as I was coming home one night on the Metro North Train, and I am objected to watching a older couple, roughly in their late 40's, completely making out. No peck on the lips, I mean full on "teenage" making out with their tongues down one an other's throats. I almost felt myself vomit in my mouth. Unfortunately it is like a car crash, and you just can't seem to look away. I mean any way that I tried to focus my attention on, I could constantly see the two "necking" in the corner of my eye.

So what I would like to know is, when is it really OK to show public affection? I mean, I get it, your "in love," or infatuated with each other, but does that really mean the rest of us to need to see it? Why can't a simple hand holding or quick kiss suffice instead of practically ripping each other's clothes off on the train.

I'm a fan of showing a person you care for them while in the proximity of other people, but I know when too much PDA is just purely revolting.

Savor the Success Media Event

Well, the Savor the Success media event was a hit on Wednesday in New York. I met with a lot of amazing people with terrific products and companies. I hope to work with many of them and get their names out there, especially within Redbook. There are so many products that women of all ages and backgrounds would really enjoy and relate well with. What woman wouldn't want to look her best when she traveled? And is there really anyone woman out there that would not like designer accessories for a really great price? And if you are a woman who wants to be comfortable but chic while working at home or walking the dog, well there is clothing to fit you perfectly!

I can't wait to see the success of these women entrepreneurs! I am so excited for them and I hope that I can help them achieve what they are looking for.

P.S. for all of you wondering if I picked out the right outfit for the event--let's just say my fuchsia pink blouse was quite a hit. The newspaper photographer told me he had to get a picture of me with my vibrant top! And I also had numerous amount of people at the event tell me I must be "quite a confident woman to wear such a 'stand out' color in New York." Haha I guess you could say I'm something like that;)

Media Event Tomorrow

As I just finished up my Asian Stir-fry, along with a glass of wine (now on my second as I type:)) I am trying to decide on an outfit for tomorrow's media event in New York. I am attending the Women Entrepreneurs Rock the World VIP Media Event at the Union Square Ballroom for Redbook and I am ecstatic! I love going to events like these because you get to meet some very unique and interesting people, and you also usually get to get some free stuff! Who wouldn't want that?

I will be viewing the hottest new products in fashion, beauty, health, pets and business along with meeting top industry experts. And to make things even better they are distributing coffee and cupcakes. This has to be every gal's dream:) haha.

Tomorrow will also mark my last day as an Intern with Redbook, however I hope to do some more freelance with them in the future. They are absolutely a wonderful company to be a part of and I feel so lucky for being able to be a part of it. I sincerely hope they will allow me to work with them on future projects. And I just love all the girls there, especially Nicole and Lindsey, who have been true inspirations to me, as well as very compassionate during the time my father passed away. Just really amazing women.
